Surge Rudder Rear Assembly is a flip up rudder (Spring loaded for the in use/ down position) designed for Sea, Touring and Sit On Top kayaks. This set comprises the back half of the rudder but not the foot controls.
This Rudder is especially popular with those who don’t want to have any rudder raise lower cords on their deck so is popular with ski paddlers swapping an underslung rudder out for shallow or white water paddling (Avon Descent). This rudder defaults to always being in the water but will pop up if it hits an obstruction and can be fitted with a raise lower cord to hold it out.
Rudder blade is a foil shape and fits closely to the rear of the kayak making for an effective system
The rear assembly includes
- Rudder blade
- Rudder mount (Rudder mount pin is approx 4 cm long and is designed for use in a bayonet pin housing (has a cut out on the pin to enable it to pass through the bayonet restriction (normally when twisted 90°) and then lock in place in normal use.
- Rudder raising cord with toggle ball,
- Jam Cleat with mounting hardware (2 x nut 2 x bolts and 2 x washers),
- Deck eye/ saddle with mounting hardware (2 x self trapping stainless screws) This is suitable for proud or recessed deck mounts (may be used proud but will stick up)
- Shock cord loop with toggle (to secure in the folded transport position) .
- Notch to secure stowage loop
If fitted Pulling on the toggle ball on the cord raises the rudder blade from the water (e.g. in Surf or shallow water or for transport). The deck cleat holds cord (and therefore the blade) in place. The deck saddle or eye is used to route/direct the cord on the deck of the kayak allowing it to be out of the way for hatches etc. and keeping Releasing the cord from the cleat allows the rudder spring to flip the blade into the water into for paddling without a rudder or for transport and storage.
This rudder has a number of features that allow it to be easily removed without untying knots allowing it to swapped in and out. This can be handy for using an underslung rudder depending on conditions or for transport and storage. Features enabling this include a double back steering cord set up (pass a loop through the hole see images), removable raise lower cord routing and bayonet pin. When fitted correctly it should be able to be removed in well under a minute.
This rudder is used on several sea kayaks including the Surge Tourer 430RS sit-in-side kayak but is most popular as a spare part for surf ski’s for paddling in shallow water or the Avon descent. This rudder is easily fitted to the Surge Avocet, Drummer, and Snapper skis as well as plastic skis by most brands including, Liker, Nordic etc. You may need to fit a bayonet sleeve insert in some models. Will also suit Stellar kayaks fitted with a rudder optional fit out.
