In 1990, at twenty, peak founder Pete Astles was living and training for slalom in Nottingham, working at a kayak shop when he caught glandular fever and couldn't train for six months, so his mind wandered in other directions. The gear in the shop fit badly. The colours were terrible, and the fabrics very basic. So Pete, who had no formal qualifications and no background in textiles or business, started to play with designs of kayak jackets and PFDs. With the help of a couple of friends, made some prototypes. His mates, all being top racers, wanted to buy them. Pete borrowed some cash off his father, purchased some fabric, foam, and a sewing machine, and started Peak UK! More than 30 years later they are still producing gear for the top kayakers in the world.
